The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has stepped up to the Intelligent Vehicles plate in a big way -- by establishing a remarkably focused IV program earlier this year.

The program, as they define it, includes vehicle systems, safety and security, and telematics.  According to SAE's flyer, "SAE is working with its corporate customers to speed the application of the technologies and reduce the time to market of [intelligent vehicle] products."  SAE is working to educate and promote IV technologies / products to both the consumer market and the engineering community.

SAE has listed IV Developmental Areas as:

Basic Vehicle
  • Comfort and convenience

  • Low-friction warning and control assist

  • Vehicle diagnostics and owner/dealer notification

  • Powertrain control

  • Braking assistance

  • Lighting control

  • Energy management

  • Chassis control

  • Smart restraints and occupant protection systems

Safety and Security
  • Collision warning / avoidance

  • Vision enhancement

  • Location-specific alert and warning

  • Automatic collision and severity notification

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Lateral control

  • Driver condition monitoring/warning

  • Obstacle / pedestrian detection

  • Safety event recorder

  • Personal security

  • Vehicle security

Telematics
  • Navigation and route guidance

  • Real time information

  • Entertainment

  • Automated transactions

  • Position reporting

  • Communications

  • Stored onboard information databases

  • Services on demand

SAE reports that it has been especially active in IV-related standards, particularly the IDB-C data bus.  Also, an Intelligent Vehicles Collaboration (IVC) has been set up for SAE Strategic Alliance member companies, "to develop and implement high quality compliance specifications and systems for IV's in a closed environment," according to an SAE flyer.  The intent of the IVC is to reduce the time to market of IV systems.

The organization also claims premier status for its online presence, dubbing its web site the "industry portal" for IVs.  Features of the site include detailed searches, promotion of new product launches, company news releases and events, and calendars relating to SAE events.

IV Conference in 2001 -- in Cyberspace

An "interactive intelligent vehicles conference" has been planned for 2001, with all attendees and speakers to be linked by computer.  The conference will be broadcast live over the internet and feature an exposition as well.

And, to cap it all off, the Society is planning the launch of a Mobile Intelligent Vehicles Tour, a "big rig" mobile technology stage which includes a 1000 square foot showroom, hands-on multimedia presentations, and four prototype vehicles.  The intent is to showcase emerging automotive electronic technologies to key consumer and commercial markets through a direct, on-site presence at key trade shows and other events.
