Transit Bus System

Extensive marketing efforts are paying off for Irisbus, according to John Marino, marketing manager for Irisbus North America. Irisbus has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Clark County, Nevada Regional Transit Commission to jointly develop specifications and an operations plan for a 10-bus Civis guided vehicle system implementation. Civis is a total bus transit concept that includes urban integration, exclusive lane operation (with operations off lane as needed), alternative propulsion systems, and advanced, railcar-like bus designs ... the latter being critical for customer appeal. As needed, buses can be implemented with automatic lateral guidance in 'narrow-lane' configuration, to more readily fit into an existing streetscape. Marino says that they expect to sign a contract this fall with Clark County for an initial five vehicle system, and an option for 5 more later. Buses in the first phase are planned for delivery in May 2002, with revenue service beginning in July 2002. The
vehicles will run on the third busiest route in their system -- from North Las
Vegas to the north end of "the strip."
The project includes more than just buses: traffic operations improvements, traffic signal
improvements, station and bus stop improvements, new guided vehicles, and
off-bus fare collection are encompassed. Automatic station docking will allow across-the-platform boarding and disembarking with very short station dwell times.
The total length of the route is 7 miles,
to be done in two phases. |
