Walter B. McCormick Jr., president and chief executive officer of the American Trucking Association (ATA), has left the association to become president of the United States Telecommunications Association as of 1 July. ATA's
senior vice president for state federation and intergovernmental affairs, Bill
Canary, will serve as acting CEO upon McCormick's departure, according to an
announcement by ATA Chairman Duane Acklie.
Canary has said he will not be a candidate for the permanent position. McCormick has a background in telecommunications law and policy, having served as Republican Chief Counsel for the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, where he was responsible for overseeing the drafting of major telecommunications legislation. While in private legal practice, McCormick also represented telecommunications interests. The USTA represents the four "Baby Bell" telephone operating companies, as well as about 1,200 local phone companies. A search
committee will organized to locate a full-time replacement, but no exact
timetable has yet been determined. ... see www.trucking.org. [Top]
