House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Reorganized |

In Congress, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (sometimes referred to as simply "T & I") has realigned its oversight of transportation. The new chairman, Don Young (R, Alaska) replaced the infamous Pennsylvanian Bud Shuster, who is retiring before the end of his current term. Young has said that alleviation of traffic jams and addressing deteriorating infrastructure will be his key priorities. This committee is responsible for developing the next version of USDOT's authorizing legislation, to replace the TEA-21 bill, which expires in September 2003. In the
committee reorganization, the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit was
established as one of six reformulated subcommittees.
Its jurisdiction will include nearly all surface transportation apart
from railroads, namely: the federal-aid highway program, highway safety and
research, public transit programs, commercial motor carrier regulation, and
safety/transportation aspects of the Clean Air Act.
This 57-member subcommittee is chaired by Rep. Thomas Petri (R,
Wisconsin). ... access www.house.gov/transportation. [Top]
