The Intelligent Transportation Society of America's Board of Directors announced that Neil D. Schuster will be the organization's new president and CEO, effective October 15, 2001.

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America announced that, effective October 15, 2001, Neil D. Schuster will be the organization's new president and CEO.  The appointment by the Society's Board of Directors follows an intensive formal search.

Schuster succeeds acting President David J. Hensing, who had held the post of ITS America president after retiring from the influential American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).  Hensing had held the post since January 2001.

Schuster is certainly well-known to transportation policy insiders: for the past 16 years, he has served as executive director for the Washington, DC-based International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA).  Prior to leading IBTTA he served in senior management positions with the American Automobile Manufacturers Association and the America Waterways Operators.

ITS America chairman Larry Yermack said, "Neil Schuster brings a significant depth of knowledge about the transportation industry, transportation technology and management skill to this position.

"He appreciates the challenges and strengths presented by ITS America, whose members have such varied interests. His experience in legislative and regulatory affairs will be a tremendous asset to ITS America as we approach the next Congressional reauthorization of transportation funding in 2003."

Schuster noted, "Traffic congestion and the growth of transit, as well as increasingly sophisticated emergency management programs, are intelligent transportation issues facing exponential growth in the near term. These deployment issues, as well as the increased presence of in-vehicle telematics, are areas where I hope to ensure that ITS America retains its leadership role."
