Basic research infrastructure being established to develop, test and evaluate advanced transport technologies and smart vehicle control systems.

The University of Queensland is leading a consortium of Australian universities, road and transport authorities and the private sector in establishing a new Intelligent Transport and Smart Vehicle Systems (ITSVS) Research Laboratory. Seed funding of US $330,000 has been provided by the Australian Research Council.

The grant will establish the basic research infrastructure needed to develop, test and evaluate advanced transport technologies and smart vehicle control systems.

Research infrastructure includes high-end computing and traffic simulation workstations, with real-time connection to selected test-beds and traffic control centers. Researchers hope to speed up the deployment and commercialization of technologies such as traffic management and information systems; collision avoidance and short-range vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure devices and communications systems.

The laboratory will provide researchers with direct access to field data from detector loops, sensors and video cameras to test prototypes of systems and evaluate their performance under live traffic conditions.
