A body of research unique worldwide has been documented in the RESPONSE final report, entitled "The Integrated Approach of User, System, and Legal Perspective: Final Report on Recommendations for Testing and Market Introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems."
Sponsored by the European Commission within their Telematics Application Program, RESPONSE ran from 1998 - 2001 and has been the only comprehensive and ongoing project that addresses legal, user, and societal perspectives for the introduction of ADAS. The project covered both driver assistance and vehicle automation, as well as driver responsibility, provider (manufacturer) liability, and legal and institutional consequences. The project was led by Dr. Stefan Becker while he was with the TÜV Kraftfahrt GmbH research institute, in the section for Innovation, Market, and Consumer Research.
The strength of the RESPONSE team creates a strong credibility to the results. Vehicle manufacturers BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Jaguar, Peugeot Citroen, Renault, Volkswagen, and Volvo participated, with Bosch, Autocruise, and the Motor Industry Research Association of Great Britain rounding out the vehicle industry players. Also involved were the Transport Research Foundation (Great Britain) and the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute. Legal and societal expertise was provided by another six firms, representing Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.

The 300-plus page report (!) contains chapters including:

  • Overview on advanced driver assistance systems and their classification
  • The average driver and driver-system interaction
  • System requirements
  • System assessment
  • Legal aspects of testing
  • Legal aspects of market introduction
  • Final recommendations and outlook

The report can be downloaded at the website: www.adase2.net/response. Look for an in-depth IVsource review of the report in the coming months.
Meanwhile, RESPONSE II will continue to examine these issues in the light of newly evolving driver assistance systems. Dr. Becker, who has now moved to the Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering Department at Ford in Cologne, Germany, will continue to lead the project. Most of the same partners from RESPONSE I will continue to be involved, along with international participation from overseas.
