Yet Another Magazine Dangles Visions
of Future Smart Cars The little press that the automated highway concept does get often makes it sound -- somewhat inaccurately -- as if it's still pie in the sky. |

The May 2002 issue of America West inflight magazine features "Riding into the Future" with the following intro blurb: "What will cars look like 20 years from now? Of course, no one can say for sure (who, two decades ago, would have predicted the rise of the SUV?), but there's no shortage of automotive experts willing to take a stab at it." This extensive (for an airline mag) article covers everything from telematics to fuel cells to flying cars to automated vehicles. Intersection collision countermeasures get some good press from Popular Science Automotive Editor Dan McCosh, saying "it could significantly cut accident rates." Sadly, however, the automated vehicle concept is once again saddled with the concept of a supposed necessary dedicated highway infrastructure. "The question is whether anyone is going to make that kind of commitment to a road network that would allow that to happen," says McCosh. Many IV experts say that automated vehicles operating in mixed traffic on regular roads are viable in the long term.
