After 3˝ million miles of driving experience, Cargo Transporters has reported that they are seeing improved safety and driver satisfaction as a result of using Iteris' AutoVueTM Lane Guidance system (see IVsource archives). The trucking company has been an AutoVue customer since January 2001. "We have an excellent safety record, but the AutoVue Lane Guidance is making it even better," said John Pope, president of Cargo Transporters. "We are currently specifying the AutoVue Lane Guidance system on all of our new truck purchases. Our drivers appreciate the extra confidence that the system provides and report that using Lane Guidance on a daily basis makes them better drivers." According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the single largest cause of driver-related fatalities is a lane departure. Over 40% of all vehicular fatalities include a lane or road departure as a contributing factor on the accident report. Many of these are single vehicle accidents that happen in clear weather. Iteris's AutoVue product addresses this concern with its Lane Departure Warning feature, which detects the position of the lane markings relative to the vehicle through machine vision. Based on the geometry of the vehicle and the roadway, advanced algorithms determine if and when the driver starts making an unintended lane departure -- and issues a warning. This warning may be audible (through the vehicle's speaker system) or haptic (vibrations through either the seat or the steering wheel), or both. Many years have been spent identifying whether a departure is intended or unintended, thus creating a system that works well to support the driver in many different driving situations, according to Iteris. "Fleet truck buyers and safety directors are increasingly recognizing Lane Guidance as a cost effective way to improve fleet safety," said Francis Memole, vice president of vehicle sensors at Iteris. "We are excited that Cargo Transporters has confirmed their confidence in Iteris' AutoVue Lane Guidance by specifying it on all of their new truck purchases." Cargo Transporters is a Claremont, North Carolina-based trucking and logistics company with intrastate and interstate common and contract authority. The company services 48 states and Canada with a fleet of 330 trucks and 1100 trailers. Cargo's website is www.cgor.com. Iteris is selling the AutoVue system to the US trucking industry with virtually no competition, as former competitor Assistware has ceased retail sales of their SafeTRAC system. SafeTRAC, which also used machine vision to provide lane departure warning, was sold directly to trucking fleets during the last several years as an aftermarket product, as well as being available on new vehicles from some trucking manufacturers. The SafeTRAC technology is now being adapted by Visteon for passenger cars (see recent IVsource article). AutoVue is also available in Europe on Mercedes Actros™ trucks. Both the SafeTRAC and AutoVue systems are employed in fleets of trucks in a field operational test of lane guidance sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Transportation (see related IVsource article on IV2002).
