The March 2003 issue of Popular Science magazine takes a crack at testing Adaptive Cruise Control systems currently offered in the US market. The magazine's research team assessed systems in the Mercedes Benz E500, the Jaguar XK-R, the Infiniti Q45, and the Lexus LS430. Since the European systems use radar and the Japanese systems use infrared laser, both major sensing modalities were addressed. Three types of tests were conducted: overtake response, cut-off test, and motorcycle test. In each test, 0-4 points were awarded, and then the results from all three tests were summed to form a final score. Mercedes and Jaguar ranked near the top, with Infiniti and Lexus several points behind them. PopSci is forthright in noting that their testing was not scientific, but they say it was designed to assess the real-world usability of ACC. [Top] |
