The Applications of Integrated Driver Assistance (AIDA) program at the University of Twente in the Netherlands will be holding its first Seminar for an invited group of industry experts on December 17, 2003 in Utrecht.

Seminar presentations and discussions are expected to revolve around systems and services for driver assistance.  The central theme is the combination and/or integration of systems for longitudinal and lateral support.

The announcement for the seminar notes that currently several examples of such systems are becoming available: the Chauffeur Assistant (as part of the EC project CHAUFFEUR-II), the Cima from Nissan (commercially available in Japan) and the Phileas guided bus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Although these systems may be desirable in certain situations and to certain users, one could express concerns about overall driver alertness, and consequently traffic safety.  Also, to what extent should integration of the functions be considered: e.g., should the function of an Adaptive Cruise Control system depend on lane width?  Are additional systems needed to monitor the driver status (workload, attention level)?  The seminar will address these issues and others from the perspectives of both research and actual practice.

The seminar will be led by Dr. Bart van Arem (University of Twente/TNO), who is the AIDA program leader.

Speakers will include Christophe Bonnet (DaimlerChrysler) regarding experience with the Chauffeur Assistant, Govert Schermers and Tom Alkim (Dutch AVV) regarding traffic flow effects of the Chauffeur Assistant, and Jeroen Hogema (TNO) regarding driving behaviour effects of the Chauffeur Assistant.

Additionally, Karel Brookhuis (University of Groningen) will speak about a human factors evaluation of the Phileas system.
