At the recent press event to kick-off their Advanced Collision Avoidance Systems (ACAS) field test, Larry Burns, General Motors' Vice-President for Research & Development and Planning, offered this view into the company’s future technology development plans.

  • Anti-lock Braking Systems

  • Traction Control

  • Semi-Active Suspension

  • Integrated Chassis Control

  • Adaptive Variable Effort Steering

  • Near Obstacle Detection

  • Vision Enhancement

Advanced technology "development stream," time-sequenced, expected to hit the market between now and 2010:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Forward Collision Warning

  • Skid Warning

  • Lane Sensing / Warning

  • Driver Performance Monitoring

  • Forward Collision Avoidance (Braking)

  • Lane Keeping

  • Road to Vehicle Communication

  • Intersection Warning

  • Vehicle-Vehicle Communication

  • Collision Avoidance (Steering)

While these IV applications are well-known throughout the industry, it is nevertheless telling to see which ones the company is willing to publicly speak about as potential future products.
